The Paint Shop

Our Paint Shop houses state of the art equipment and we have a reputation for producing high quality paintwork. The use of a quality two pack paint system together with the latest infra-red lamps and a low bake curing oven ensures a long lasting durable finish.

Preparation

The key to a high quality finish is in the preparation and there is no substitute for skilled craftsmen.

Paint

We use Glasurit 90 line and 22 line colour and clear top coats. A full range of primers and surfacers to cope with aluminium, steel, galvanised steels and plastics are carried in stock. Glasurit is a well established German paint company with a reputation for quality.

Colour

Our own in-house colour mixing system provides the choice of literally thousands of colours and the ability to mix virtually any colour, in any quantity, at any time.

Polishing

Initial polishing is carried out by machine but to ensure an even lustre, all paintwork is hand finished.

The Fourteen stages of a typical Morgan repaint

Of course no two Morgans are identical and customers have specific requirements, being a small company we are able to adapt our processes and are happy to discuss the best methods and materials according to the condition of the car and it's intended usage.

Step one
Assess your requirements and make a thorough inspection of the car. Discuss the options open to you and compile an estimate.
Step two
Remove the interior trim, seats, carpets, weather equipment, dashboard, instrument panel, windscreen, wipers, washer jets, bonnet catches, grille, badges, front lamps, front bumper, rear lamps, rear bumper, luggage rack, fuel filler cap, wing tread strips, door fittings, windscreen wiper motor, battery, heater assembly etc.etc.

Step three
Remove bonnets, grille cowl, doors, four wings, numberplate panel, toolbox, heater casing.
Step four
Removal of the paint, the loose panels are sent to a specialist for chemical dipping. The doors, bodytub and bulkhead are stripped by hand. Wing stays, bumper irons and other small brackets are sent for shotblasting and zinc spraying. The chassis frame and inner wings are de-greased and wire brushed.

Step five
All panels, brackets etc. are inspected and any fractures or corrosion issues are addressed. The holes in sheet metal components are slightly enlarged to allow for some paint. The panels are then sanded to a bright finish and shaped up ready for the painting process.
Step six
All metalwork is pre-cleaned, the chassis, woodwork etc. is masked off and a single coat of wash etch primer is applied, this is followed by two coats of high build primer filler. All loose panels are painted off the vehicle on our specially constructed trolleys and both sides of the panels are coated.

Step seven
The high build primer filler is then sanded back to a smooth finish, and two more coats are applied to the outer surfaces. This is sanded back again and coated with two surfacer coats of a similar colour to the topcoat.
Step eight
The underside of the wings is cleaned, any seams and wired edges are sealed and two coats of anti-chip coating are applied. The bulkhead, bumper brackets and underside of the wings are then painted, usually in two pack black gloss.
[ mixing room ]
Step nine
The outer faces of all body panels are then sanded and the final colour and lacquer coats are applied.
Step ten
Following a 24 hour period the panels are then burnished first by machine and then by hand.
Step eleven
The chassis and inner wings are painted (as best we can whilst assembled). New wing piping and bonnet tape is fitted and the loose panels are refitted to the bodytub/chassis.
[ wings ]
Step twelve
Clean and refit the interior trim, seats, carpets, weather equipment, dashboard, instrument panel, windscreen, wipers, washer jets, bonnet catches, grille, badges, front lamps, front bumper, rear lamps, rear bumper, luggage rack, fuel filler cap, wing tread strips, door fittings, windscreen wiper motor, battery, heater assembly etc.etc.
Step thirteen
The car is then cleaned and final electrical and mechanical checks are carried out.
Step fourteen
We offer the car for your inspection and collection.

Repainting a Morgan is very labour intensive, it requires a good deal of craftsmanship, experience and dedication to achieve a durable and attractive finish. This is complimented by the use high quality materials and fixings.

During the various stages of repair we normally e-mail you photographs so that you can keep a track on the progress. The timescale involved is normally around five weeks, dependent on exact specification.
